Fan Rummy is a new and interesting card game, which is similar to Gin Rummy but a little different. This game was created by Daniel Friedman. If you like Gin Rummy, then Fan Rummy will give you even more fun.
This article explains Fan Rummy to you in the simplest way – so that you can start playing without any confusion. We have also added some extra creative points in it which you will not find anywhere else.
What is Fan Rummy?
Fan Rummy is a card game in which 2 people play. In this, you have to make your cards in sets and runs, just like in Gin Rummy. But it has some new twists – like face down discards and 2 separate columns.
How to start the game?
- A normal 52-card deck is used.
- Both players get 10 cards each.
- 2 separate columns are made on the table – each column has 10 face-up cards.
- Another card is placed face-up between these columns – called the Knock Card.
- This Knock Card tells you the maximum number of “deadwood points” you can have when you want to end the round.
Note: When the Knock Card is picked up, it is a good idea to write down its number.
How is the game played?
- The non-dealer player can take the Knock Card or pass it.
- If he passes, the dealer has to take that card.
- Discarding the card is mandatory – but it is face down (face up in Gin Rummy).
- The rest of the deck is made into a draw pile and placed in the center.
The player has two options:
- Pick up a card from the draw pile
- Take the top card of any one column
- After that, one card has to be discarded – always face down.
When does the round end?
The round can end in three ways:
Knocking:
When you have less than or equal to the number of deadwood points than the number of the knocked card, you can end the round.
Counting:
If all your cards are in sets or runs, then you have counted them. This gives a bonus.
Big Gin:
If you make sets or runs with 11 cards – meaning you don’t need to discard a card even after a draw – then you have made a Big Gin. This gives an even bigger bonus.
How is scoring done?
- After the round ends, the deadwood points of both players are counted.
- The player who ends the round with fewer deadwood points wins the points (opponent’s points – his own points).
- If his points are more, he is said to be undercut and his opponent gets 25 bonus points plus the point difference.
Special Points:
- On Gin: 25 points + opponent’s deadwood points
- On Big Gin: 31 points + opponent’s deadwood points
- If the Knock Card is a Spade: All points are doubled!
Who is the winner of the game?
The player who gets 100 points first is the winner of the game.
