Gallinazo is a fascinating domino game popular in Puerto Rico and Mexico. It’s easy to play, full of strategy, and perfect for casual gatherings. While similar to The Block Game, Gallinazo stands out with its unique scoring system that adds a twist to the classic domino gameplay.
How to Play Gallinazo
To start the game, a single player mixes the dominoes face down on the table to shuffle them. Once shuffled, each player takes turns drawing one tile at a time until they have 7 dominoes each.
The player who has the double-six domino begins the game by placing it in the center of the table. Afterward, the game proceeds clockwise. Each player lays down a domino that matches the number of pips (dots) on one end of the dominoes already on the table. If a player cannot make a legal move, they skip their turn.
Scoring and Winning
Gallinazo ends when one player uses all their dominoes or when no player can make a move, and the game becomes blocked. The round then concludes, and scoring begins.
- For the player who finishes first (dominoes out): Their opponents’ remaining dominoes are counted. If any opponent has fewer or equal pips than the player who finished, the winner gets four times the value of those remaining pips.
- For other players: They only score the pips left in their hand.
The game is played over seven rounds. At the end of the seven deals, the player with the lowest overall score is declared the winner. And here’s the fun part: the loser (the one with the highest score) has to buy drinks or snacks for the group!
What Makes Gallinazo Unique
- Scoring Rules Add Excitement: Unlike traditional domino games, the scoring in Gallinazo allows for creative strategies. Players must carefully manage their moves to avoid giving their opponents an advantage.
- Simple Yet Competitive: Gallinazo doesn’t require complicated setups or rules, making it accessible for everyone while still offering depth for those who enjoy strategic gameplay.
- Social Fun: With its playful rule of the loser treating the group, Gallinazo brings a lively, social aspect to the table.
