Honor of Kings announces $3 million midseason competition at Esports World Cup

Honor of Kings, a mobile MOBA game developed by Level Infinite, are going to hold a $3 million (~£2.38 million) competition at the Esports World Cup.

The Esports World Cup is set to electrify Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this summer, drawing elite players and teams from across the globe to vie for supremacy in a diverse array of tournaments spanning various games, all competing for a share of an anticipated monumental prize pool. Interestingly, this event might ring a bell as it marks the rebranding of last year’s Gamers8 festival in the same location.

Previously, we’ve highlighted Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2 and StarCraft II as featured titles in the lineup. Excitingly, the roster now expands with the inclusion of Honor of Kings and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang as additional playable titles, promising a richer and more varied competitive landscape.

Despite these exciting revelations, key details such as the exact event date and the total prize pool for the EWC this year remain shrouded in mystery. As anticipation builds, the esports community eagerly awaits more information in the upcoming weeks, hoping to unveil the full spectacle and rewards awaiting participants in this prestigious gaming extravaganza.

Adding to the excitement, Level Infinite has disclosed that the KPL Dream Team, a formidable Chinese roster comprising top players from the King Pro League, will be the inaugural invited team to the Invitational Midseason. This team selection marks a significant milestone for the Honor of Kings franchised tier-one competition, promising intense competition. While additional participating teams remain undisclosed, the victor of the Invitational Midseason will secure a coveted spot in the prestigious Invitational Championship.

The Esports World Cup, introduced in October 2023, is poised to become an annual extravaganza featuring multiple esports titles in Saudi Arabia. Beyond Honor of Kings, Starcraft 2, Counter-Strike 2 and the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid-Season Cup have been confirmed as part of the event lineup, showcasing a diverse range of competitive gaming experiences.

However, the Esports World Cup has not been without controversy. Backed by the Saudi Arabian government, the event has faced criticism from segments of the esports community, with concerns raised about the concept of ‘esportswashing.’ Critics argue that Saudi Arabia may be attempting to divert attention from its human rights record through investments in esports.

James Yang, Senior Director of Level Infinite Global Esports Center at Tencent Games, expressed enthusiasm about the Esports World Cup, highlighting its potential to bring international recognition to Honor of Kings as the world’s most-played mobile MOBA title. He stated, “Honor of Kings is the latest example of our commitment to the mobile esports space, as we continue to prioritize our investment in the esports landscape.”
