Electronic Arts has laid off nearly 300 employees and cancelled a new Titanfall game, which was in development at its Respawn Entertainment studio. The layoffs include approximately 100 positions at Respawn, known for the Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series. The cancelled project, code-named R7, was an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe and led by franchise director Seteve Fukuda.
A company spokesperson told Reuters, “As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organisation that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth,”
Respawn took to their X account and wrote, “We’ve made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some targeted adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.”
What Does Electronic Arts’ Layoff Mean?
The layoffs follow Electronic Arts’ elimination of 5% of its workforce in 2024 and over 1,100 positions in 2023. Rising development costs and economic pressures, including weak performance of titles like Dragon Age and FC 25, have led to a prioritisation of established franchises over experimental projects.
Electronic Arts’ cancellation of R7 represents the second scrapped Titanfall project in recent years, following the 2023 axing of Titanfall Legends, a crossover project with Apex Legends.
