There’s been a lot of speculation of late as to what NetherRealm Studios is working on next, and the latest rumours suggest it’s not a simple sequel. Most had expected Injustice 3 to follow the same path as the first two games, but new reports point to something that could feel very different.
It’s understandable that attention has turned with Mortal Kombat 1 nearing the end of its life cycle. Hints have been dropped before, with voice actors and internal references hinting at Injustice 3 being in development. That hasn’t changed that much. What’s changed is what the game might actually look like when it comes out.
The next project, according to fighting game YouTuber Rooflemonger, could still have Injustice in the title but may not continue the series in the way fans expect. It could lean more towards a wider DC fighting game, something less connected to what came before, rather than picking up directly from the previous story.

A different direction for DC fighters?
That theory started to pick up more steam when MultiverSusie posted similar claims . There’s even a chance the game moves away from the Injustice branding altogether, which would fit the idea of starting fresh rather than continue an already complicated storyline, according to said reports.
If that ends up being the case, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising. This is something NetherRealm has done before, with its other big franchise, rewinding timelines and changing how stuff fits together. Things are already at a point where it might be tricky to continue the story directly based on the ending of Injustice 2, so a reset might actually make things simpler.
The new approach could also lead to more options. Instead of limiting it to past events, the developers could pull in a wider variety of characters and versions from across the DC universe. That sort of flexibility can make the roster feel bigger and less confining.
Of course, it’s still very early and none of this has been confirmed officially yet. Rumours don’t always come true and plans are subject to change. But with a number of sources pointing the same way, it does feel like something a little bit different is being worked on.
The next DC fighting game from NetherRealm might be a reset, not just another sequel, whatever it ends up being called: Injustice 3 or something brand new.
