Subnautica 2 is already making waves only hours after entering early access. The survival sequel has exploded in popularity on Steam and quickly became one of the biggest game launches of 2026, breaking a major player count record in the process.
The game officially launched into early access on May 14, and the response from players was immediate. Within just a few hours, hundreds of thousands of people had already jumped into the underwater survival experience, showing just how much anticipation surrounded the sequel before release.
Developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, Subnautica 2 arrived with massive expectations attached to it. The original Subnautica became one of the most popular survival games ever thanks to its exploration, atmosphere, and unique underwater setting. Even years after launch, the series still has a huge fanbase, which clearly carried over into the sequel’s release.
Steam player numbers climb past major 2026 releases for Subnautica 2
According to early Steam data, Subnautica 2 reached a peak of more than 467,000 concurrent players shortly after launch. That was enough to push it past Resident Evil Requiem and give it the biggest Steam launch for a 2026 release so far.
Resident Evil Requiem previously held the record after reaching around 344,000 concurrent players earlier this year. Subnautica 2 managed to beat that mark comfortably despite still being in early access rather than a full release.
The strong start becomes even more impressive considering the game has already gone through several difficult moments before launch. Recent reports about disagreements involving Unknown Worlds and Krafton created uncertainty around the project, and many fans were closely watching how the release would perform.
Despite all of that, the launch has clearly been a success. The game also currently holds a very positive user rating on Steam, with many players praising the visuals, exploration, and atmosphere already available in the early access build.
Another reason behind the huge launch could be the pricing. Subnautica 2 launched at $29.99, making it more affordable compared to many major releases in 2026. The game is also available through Xbox Game Pass, giving even more players access from day one.
Unknown Worlds has already confirmed that the game will stay in early access for at least two to three years. During that period, developers plan to continue adding new areas, mechanics, creatures, and additional features based on player feedback.
For now, though, Subnautica 2 has already achieved something most games struggle to do. In just a few hours, it became one of the biggest launches of the year and proved that excitement around the series is still incredibly strong.
