Setting Up the Game

The rolled dice are placed on the Red Joker card, and the remaining deck is placed in the middle as the draw pile. The top card of the deck is flipped face-up to start the discard pile.

How the Game Works: Step-by-Step

First Turn:

  • The non-dealer gets the first choice: they can take the face-up card from the discard pile or skip it.

  • If the non-dealer skips, the dealer can then choose to take it.

  • If both players skip, the non-dealer draws from the draw pile.

Every turn ends with a discard, and the game continues as players take turns drawing, melding, and discarding.

Regular Play:

  • Draw a card: At the start of each turn, the player draws a card either from the draw pile or the discard pile.

  • Make melds: The player organizes cards in their hand into melds (sets, runs, stashes, or Queen’s Diamonds).

  • Discard a card: End the turn by discarding one card onto the discard pile.

Types of Melds in Gem Rummy

Melds are the key to winning in Gem Rummy. There are four types of melds:

  • Sets: 3 or more cards of the same rank (e.g., 3 Kings).

  • Runs: 3 or more cards in sequence and of the same suit (e.g., 4♠, 5♠, 6♠).

  • Stashes: 4 or more cards of the same gem color (e.g., all red cards).

  • Queen’s Diamonds: A Queen plus the special diamond number rolled at the start of the round.

How to End the Round

A round in Gem Rummy ends when a player either:

  • Knocks: If their “deadwood” (cards not in melds) is equal to or below the knock limit.

  • Gins: If a player forms melds with all 11 cards and says “GIN.”

  • Big Gin: If a player forms melds with all 12 cards (without discarding) and calls “Big Gin.”

In the case where only 2 cards are left in the draw pile, the round ends in a draw, and no one scores points.

Scoring in Gem Rummy

After the round ends, it’s time to tally the points:

  • Card Values:

    • Ace = 1 point

    • 2–10 = face value

    • J, Q, K = 10 points each

  • Scoring Based on Actions:

    • Knocker: The knocker scores the difference in deadwood points.

    • Gin: A Gin player gets 25 points plus the opponent’s deadwood.

    • Big Gin: A Big Gin player scores 35 points plus the opponent’s deadwood.

    • Undercut: If the non-knocker has fewer points, they score 25 points.

  • Gem Bonus: Players can earn bonus points based on the number of gem colors they have:

    • 8 gem colors: 8 points for the non-knocker, 16 points for the knocker.

Winning the Game

The game continues until one player reaches 110 points, making them the winner. If both players reach 110 points in the same round, the player with the highest score in that round wins.

Rules for 3 Players

For a 3-player game:

  • Each player gets 11 cards.

  • The player to the left of the dealer goes first.

  • Players can draw from the discard pile or draw pile, but must follow the same rules for knocking or going Gin.
