Civilization 7: Find And Use Artifacts

Want to dominate Civilization 7 with a Cultural Victory? Artifacts are your secret weapon. These ancient treasures boost your culture, making your civilization a global powerhouse. But collecting them? That’s where strategy comes in.

In this guide, we’ll break it down step by step. Simple. Effective. And guaranteed to keep you ahead of your rivals.

Step 1: Unlock the Natural History Civic

Before you can start digging, you need the Natural History Civic. Why? Because it unlocks Explorers—the only units capable of excavating ruins and recovering artifacts. No civic, no artifacts. Simple as that.

Step 2: Research and Reveal Artifact Sites

Got your Explorers ready? Great. Now, it’s time to locate those precious dig sites.

Here’s what to do:

  • Build a University or Museum (they help uncover artifact sites).
  • Send your Explorer on a research mission.
  • Reveal Exploration Age artifact sites on the map.

Want even more artifacts? Unlock the Hegemony civic. It expands your dig site options, giving you access to Antiquity Age artifacts. Pro tip: Universities and Museums only reveal artifacts in their region. So, having multiple cities—or alliances across continents—means more artifacts.

Step 3: Locate and Excavate Dig Sites

Now comes the fun part—digging!

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the minimap and select the Continent Lens.
  2. Look for excavation markers.
  3. Move your Explorer to the site.
  4. Select Excavate Artifact.
  5. Wait a few turns… and boom! You’ve got yourself an artifact.

Step 4: Display Artifacts for Maximum Culture

Collecting artifacts is just half the battle. You need to display them to maximize your culture boost.

Here’s where you can showcase your treasures:

  • Palaces (your civilization’s heart)
  • Museums (boosts culture significantly)
  • Wonders like Hermitage and Palacio de Bellas Artes

Each displayed artifact adds +4 Culture. Want a Cultural Victory? You’ll need at least 15 displayed artifacts to get there.

Bonus: More Ways to Collect Artifacts

Ruins aren’t the only source of artifacts. Here are some bonus ways to get them:

  • Narrative Events – Some in-game events grant artifacts. But beware—some come with a cultural penalty.
  • City-State Suzerain Bonus – Become a suzerain of a city-state with the Antiquarianism bonus, and you can claim an artifact without even excavating.
