US Gaming Industry broke all records with revenue of $72 billion in 2024
America’s gaming industry achieved its biggest financial milestone so far in 2024. According to a report by the American Gaming Association (AGA), this year US commercial gaming revenue reached $72 billion for the first time – a jump of almost 7.5% compared to 2023. This is the fourth consecutive year when the industry has set new revenue records.
Commercial gaming sector is taking off
In 2024 commercial casinos delivered record-breaking performance. Revenue grew by 8.1%, indicating that despite economic pressure and inflation, people’s interest in gaming has remained intact. When tribal gaming numbers were also included, the total revenue of the entire US gaming market reached around $115 billion.
This trend clearly shows that the industry not only recovered after COVID-19 but also touched new growth levels.
Americans’ growing inclination towards gambling
According to the report, 55% of American adults did some form of gambling in 2024. In addition, 45% of people visited a casino. Sports betting is also becoming increasingly popular, where 21% of adults placing their bets.
The strongest signal was that now 88% of Americans consider gambling socially acceptable, either for themselves or for others. This year 59% of people said that gambling is personally acceptable for them, which is the highest percentage so far.
Jump in Tax Revenue
The US also got direct benefits from the high performance of gaming operators. The total of direct gaming taxes reached $15.91 billion in 2024, which is 8.5% more than last year. This is only the data of those taxes that are collected directly from gaming.
AGA said that the entire casino industry ecosystem has reached $329 billion, which provides jobs to 1.8 million people across the country.
Responsible Gaming Banned as Core Priority
In 2024, the industry has stepped up its focus on responsible gaming initiatives. $471.8 million was invested in this direction, a 72% jump from 2017.
Several states, including Michigan, New Jersey, and DC, have announced new responsible gaming programs. Maine, New Jersey, and North Carolina have improved self-exclusion systems. New York and West Virginia have taken steps to strengthen research and support mechanisms.
According to the report, 65% of Americans believe the industry is serious about tackling problem gambling, compared to less than 40% in 2018.
States showed explosive performance
In 2024, 28 out of 38 jurisdictions recorded growth in their commercial gaming revenue. 27 states and DC reported all-time high earnings.
- Nevada crossed the $15 billion target for the second time.
- Pennsylvania and New Jersey both generated $6 billion+ revenue, mainly due to iGaming.
- New York reached $5 billion in commercial revenue for the first time and became the top betting market with $2 billion+ in sports betting.
- Illinois showed growth of 15.8%, with total revenue reaching $2.92 billion.
- Michigan’s total revenue reached $4.19 billion, with more than $2 billion coming from iGaming.
- The 7 states with online casinos reported a combined $8.41 billion in iGaming revenue, a growth of 28.7%.
- Commercial sports betting also produced strong results – $13.78 billion, of which 27% came from online platforms. Retail betting declined by more than 23%.
