Master the Basics of Omaha Poker with Simple Rules and Strategies
If you love playing Texas Hold’em and want to try something new, Omaha Poker is the perfect next step. It’s the second most popular poker game in the world. While the rules are similar to Hold’em, the twist is that each player gets four hole cards instead of two. But remember you can only use two of your hole cards along with three community cards to make the best hand.
What You Need to Start
Before the game begins, you need:
- A standard deck of 52 cards.
- Poker chips for betting.
- At least 2 players (best with 4-6).
- A dealer to manage the cards.
Picking the First Dealer
To choose a dealer, give one card face-up to each player. The highest card deals first. If two players tie, the suit decides the winner (Spades > Hearts > Diamonds > Clubs). After choosing the dealer, they shuffle and deal the cards.
The Blinds
Before cards are dealt, the two players to the dealer’s left place blinds:
- Small blind: Half the minimum bet.
- Big blind: Full minimum bet.
This starts the pot and encourages betting.
Dealing the Cards
Each player receives four cards, face down. These are your hole cards. Only you can see your own cards.

- Royal Flush – A, K, Q, J, 10 (same suit)

How to Play Omaha Poker (Pot-Limit Version)
1. Preflop (First Betting Round)
- Starts with the player to the left of the big blind.
- Each player can fold, call, or raise.
- You must match or beat the previous bet to stay in the round.
2. The Flop
- Dealer burns one card (puts it aside).
- Then, three community cards are placed face-up on the table.
- Another round of betting begins.
3. The Turn
- One more card is burned.
- Fourth community card (the Turn) is placed face-up.
- Betting round begins again, usually with a higher minimum bet.
4. The River
- Another card is burned.
- Fifth and final community card (the River) is dealt face-up.
- Final betting round begins.
5. Showdown
- If two or more players are still in the game after the river, they reveal their hands.
- Players must use exactly two of their hole cards and three from the community cards.
- The best hand wins the pot.

Community Cards: J, Q, K, 9, 3
Player A: 10, 9, 4, 2
Player B: 10, J, 6, 8
Player A’s Hand: 9, 10 + J, Q, K = Straight

Simple Omaha Poker Tips to Win More
1. Choose Strong Hands
Start with hands like:
- A-A-K-K
- A-A-J-J
- K-Q-J-10
- J-10-9-8 (double-suited is even better)
These hands give you multiple chances to make strong combinations.
2. Raise or Fold
Try not to just call bets. Either raise when you have a good hand or fold when you don’t. It saves chips and keeps your strategy sharp.
3. Don’t Trust Big Bets Too Quickly
Omaha is not like Hold’em. Players bluff less in this game. If someone bets big, they probably have a strong hand.
4. Look for Drawing Hands
You don’t always need the best hand at the start. If your hand has the potential for a straight or flush, it’s still worth playing.
5. Pay Attention to Position
The later you act in a round, the more you know about other players’ decisions. Use this to your advantage.
