Icelandic Gúrka is an exciting trick-taking card game designed for 2 to 4 players. The objective of the game is simple: avoid elimination and be the last player standing. This game is easy to learn and fun to play with friends and family.
Setup
To set up the game:
Choose a dealer for the first round. The dealer will shuffle the deck thoroughly.
The dealer deals 10 cards face-down to each player for the first round. The leftover cards form a face-down pile at the center of the table.
For each new round, the number of cards dealt decreases by 1. For example:
- Round 1: 10 cards per player
- Round 2: 9 cards per player
- Round 3: 8 cards per player, and so on.
Continue reducing the cards until the final rounds.
Card Rankings
The cards in Icelandic Gúrka have a special ranking system:
- Highest card: 6 of Clubs
- Lowest card: 2
The full ranking from highest to lowest is:
6 of Clubs, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 (other suits), 5, 4, 3, 2.
Gameplay

Icelandic Gúrka
The game is played in multiple rounds, and each round consists of several tricks. Here is how it works:
Starting the Round:
- The player to the dealer’s left begins the first trick by playing one or more cards of the same rank.
- The next players must play cards of the same rank or higher.
- If a player cannot play a higher-ranked card, they must play their lowest-ranked card(s).
Winning a Trick:
- The player who plays the highest-ranked card(s) wins the trick.
- If two players play cards of the same rank, the last player to play the highest card(s) wins the trick.
- The winner of the trick starts the next one.
Final Trick:
- Each player must keep one card for the last trick.
- This card is played as the final move of the round.
Scoring and Penalties
At the end of each round, the player who wins the last trick gets penalized. The penalty is based on the rank of the winning card:
- 6 of Clubs: 21 points
- Ace: 14 points
- King: 13 points
- Queen: 12 points
- Jack: 11 points
All other cards are worth their face value (e.g., 10 = 10 points, 9 = 9 points, etc.).
The penalized card is kept by the player, and the deck is reshuffled for the next round.
Elimination Rules
If a player’s total score exceeds 21 points, they are eliminated from the game.
If a player reaches exactly 21 points, they get a second chance! Their score resets to 0, and they continue playing.
The game continues until only one player remains. That player is the winner!
Dealer Rotation
At the start of each new round, the player to the dealer’s left becomes the new dealer. If that player has been eliminated, the role moves to the next active player.
Strategy Tips for Winning
To improve your chances of winning Icelandic Gúrka, consider these strategies:
- Save your highest cards: Use high cards like the 6 of Clubs or Ace carefully. Avoid winning the last trick unless necessary.
- Force others to lose: If you can, play cards that pressure your opponents into playing their valuable cards early.
- Keep track of cards: Remember which high cards have already been played to predict your opponents’ moves.
- Avoid the last trick: The last trick carries penalties, so try not to win it unless you have no other choice.
