Kierki is a traditional Polish card game for 4 players. The goal is to finish the game with the most points. The game is divided into two parts: one where you try to avoid taking tricks, and another where you try to win tricks and play a mini-game called Fan Tan. It’s fun, strategic, and full of twists!
Game Setup
To start, choose a dealer randomly. The deal moves to the left after each round. The dealer shuffles and deals 13 cards to each player, one at a time, clockwise.
Card Order (High to Low)
Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2
Part 1: Rozgrywka – Avoid Tricks and Penalties
This part has 7 rounds, and the aim is to avoid getting tricked into winning certain cards. There are no trump cards in this half of the game. Each round has different penalty rules.
How It Works:
- The player left of the dealer starts the round.
- They lead with any card, and others must follow suit if they can.
- If they can’t follow suit, they can play any card.
- The highest card in the lead suit wins the trick.
- The player who wins the trick leads the next one.
Scoring for Each Round in Part 1:
- Deal 1: Each trick = -20 points
- Deal 2: Each heart = -20 points (you can’t lead hearts unless you have no choice)
- Deal 3: Each Queen = -60 points
- Deal 4: Each Jack or King = -30 points
- Deal 5: Whoever wins the King of Hearts loses 150 points (again, don’t lead hearts unless no other option)
- Deal 6: If you win the 7th or last trick, lose 75 points each
- Deal 7: All the above rules apply at once!
Total penalty points possible in this half = 2600 points
Part 2: Odgrywka – Now, Try to Win Tricks
This part has 4 trick-taking rounds and ends with a Fan Tan mini-game, also known as the “little lottery.” In this half, your goal is to win tricks and score points.
Here’s How It Works:
- Each player gets 5 cards first.
- The dealer looks at their cards and chooses a trump suit.
- Then the dealer finishes dealing so all players have 13 cards.
- The game begins with the dealer leading the first trick.
- You must follow suit if possible. If you can’t, play any card.
- Highest trump wins the trick. If no trump, highest card in the lead suit wins.
- Each trick you win = +25 points
The Little Lottery: Fan Tan
After the 4 rounds, players compete in a Fan Tan game to get rid of their cards:
- The dealer starts, and the first card for each suit must be a 7
- From there, players can place cards in ascending or descending order (like 6 or 8 after a 7)
- If you can’t play, you pass
- First player to play all cards earns 800 points
- Second player to finish earns 500 points
This final part adds another 1300 points to the game, making the total available in this half also 2600 points
How the Game Ends
The game ends when the second player finishes their cards in the Fan Tan round. All players then total up their points from both parts of the game. The player with the highest final score is the winner!
