Hanabi isn’t just another card game. It’s a test of teamwork, memory, and communication where players work together to create a stunning fireworks show. The catch? You can’t see your own cards!
The good news? This guide will teach you everything you need to know, from setup to winning strategies, so you can light up the sky with perfect fireworks. Let’s dive in!
Setting Up the Game
Setting up Hanabi is quick and easy. Follow these steps:
- Prepare the Tokens: Place 8 blue hint tokens in a line. Stack the red danger tokens so the fuse gets longer as you stack upward (explosion icon at the bottom).
- Shuffle the Cards: Mix the Hanabi cards thoroughly. Want a challenge? Add the optional multicolored cards for extra difficulty.
Deal the Cards:
- For 2-3 players: Deal 5 cards per player.
- For 4-5 players: Deal 4 cards per player.
- No Peeking! Hold your cards so the backs face you. You can see everyone else’s cards, but not your own.
- Place the Deck: Put the remaining deck face down in the center.
And that’s it! You’re ready to play.
How to Play Hanabi
Players take turns clockwise. Who goes first? Whoever is wearing the most colorful outfit (yes, seriously). Each turn, you must choose one of these actions:
1. Give a Clue
- Use a blue hint token to give a clue to another player.
- A clue describes one characteristic: either colour (e.g., “You have two blue cards”) or number (e.g., “You have one three”). Not both.
- Point to all the relevant cards in their hand.
No hint tokens left? Someone must discard a card to regain one.
2. Discard a Card
- Discard a card you think isn’t needed. This flips a blue hint token back over.
- Draw a new card from the deck (without looking at it).
3. Play a Card
Choose a card to play. Two things can happen:
- Correct Play: The card starts a new firework (a 1) or continues one in ascending order (e.g., 2 after 1).
- Incorrect Play: Remove a red danger token. If all red tokens are gone? Boom. Game over.
- Scoring Points: Building the Fireworks
Your goal? Build five (or six with multicolored cards) perfect fireworks. A complete firework includes cards numbered 1 to 5 in order.
Here’s the breakdown of cards per firework:
- Three copies of 1
- Two copies of 2, 3, and 4
- One copy of 5
Each time you complete a firework, you get a blue hint token back. Remember: only one firework per color.
How to Win Hanabi

The game ends in one of three ways:
- Explosion: All red danger tokens are used. Game over. Everyone loses.
- Perfect Fireworks: Complete all 5 (or 6) fireworks before the deck runs out. Perfect score!
- Deck Runs Out: Once the last card is drawn, each player gets one final turn. Then, you calculate your score.

Expert Tips for Winning Hanabi
These tips will help you master Hanabi:
- Communication is Key: Use hints wisely. Focus on clues that help others play or discard cards.
- Track Information: Pay attention to hints given to everyone, not just you. It’s a team effort.
- Avoid Risks: Don’t play a card unless you’re sure it’s correct. Mistakes cost red tokens.
- Discard Smartly: Duplicate 1s? Unneeded cards? Discard them to regain blue hint tokens.
- Save the Fives: There’s only one 5 per colour. Protect it. Play it when the timing is right.
- Plan Ahead: Think about how each move affects the team’s progress. Sometimes discarding is better than guessing.
