Most Steam party games grab players’ attention at first, but the excitement often fades after a few days. Once the game stops feeling new, many players move on to something else. I thought Meccha Chameleon would be no different, but after playing it, I quickly changed my mind.
When I first tried this game with my friends, I lowkey thought it was just another hide-and-seek game, where some of my friends hide, I go seek them, then it’s over. Turns out the devs added some genuinely fire twists to the concept. In this game you don’t just hide, you use the game’s colours to go basically invisible. And NGL, this game sold millions of copies within days of launch.
Gameplay That Truly Shines
Meccha Chameleon’s core gameplay is fairly simple. Players are split into two roles:
- Hiders
- Seekers
As a Hider, you’ve got to blend with the colours and surroundings of the environment. You can spray paint to change your colour and merge with walls, floors, or objects. That’s honestly the most hilarious part of the game.
Sometimes your camouflage is really good. A Seeker walks right past you without seeing you. That feeling is really great.
Playing with friends on Discord makes these moments funnier. The craziness gets worse when everyone is yelling and teasing each other.
Being a Seeker Is Not as Much Fun
I was just talking about how cool it is to hide so what about being the Seeker? Personally, I do not like it. This game is more fun when you are hiding.
The reason is simple: when everyone looks like they are part of the environment it gets really annoying to find them. You have to check every corner. Every object looks like someone could be hiding behind it. Players could be hiding behind anything. When you add in the problem or visual issue it gets even more crazy when you are looking for people.
TBH, almost every hide-and-seek game has this problem.
Even as kids, nobody wanted to be the seeker the one stuck finding everyone. Everyone wanted to hide because it’s just more fun. Same story here.
The Different Game Modes Are Really Fun
The game doesn’t stop at one mode. You get modes that keep things exciting and fresh.
In team mode, Hiders and Seekers are on separate teams, which is pretty cool.
In Infection mode, if a Hider gets caught by a Seeker, they flip into a hunter and start hunting the rest of the players kind of terrifying honestly.
Double mode goes even harder, eventually everyone becomes a hunter and it gets straight up unhinged.
These modes keep the gameplay from getting stale. Every match feels unique, which is a huge W for players.
The Visuals Are Simple, But They Work
Graphically, Meccha Chameleon isn’t trying to be an Unreal Engine showcase. The game wasn’t built for ultra-realistic visuals wasn’t really the goal here. TBH, it doesn’t need them.
The games about the gameplay loop, and the simple style is exactly what makes it work.
The maps are super colourful, with plenty of spots to hide. You get all kinds of areas, art museums, industrial zones, you name it. Best part: the graphics never get in the way of actually playing.
Community Mods Are the Game’s Future
If there’s one thing keeping Meccha Chameleon alive long-term, it’s the community making their own content.
Players are already dropping custom maps. I tried a few fan-made ones inspired by Minecraft and the Backrooms, and NGL some hit harder than the official maps. This is exactly what keeps a game alive for years.
The more people who play, the more content drops. With the player base growing, expect even more creative maps from the community going forward.
The Audio is a Bit Basic
The sound design is decent. Gunshots, spray-paint sounds, basic environmental effects that’s about it.
To be honest, the sounds don’t really stand out or stick with you.
Is that a problem? Not really. This games about what you see and how you play with others. Better sound design would’ve made things feel more immersive, sure, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
This Game is a Steal for the Price
What really shocks me is how cheap this game is. You can grab it for around 6 dollars. That’s enough to keep you and your friends entertained for ages.
Sometimes a single in-game item cost more than that. It’s wild how much value you get for such a low price.
If you’ve got friends who love gaming together, you need this game in your library.
Pros
- Unique paint-and-hide gameplay
- Great fun with friends
- Massive mod support
- Low price
- Replay ability
- Funny moments in every match
Cons
- Less fun when playing solo
- The Seeker role can feel frustrating at times
- Some bugs and glitches are still present
My Verdict
Meccha Chameleon is a fun party game that makes a simple idea feel new. We have all played hide-and-seek times but the paint-and-hide feature in Meccha Chameleon makes it different.
If you enjoy hanging out with friends at night making jokes on Discord and playing games that always make you laugh then you should try Meccha Chameleon.
There are some problems, with balance here and there but Meccha Chameleon is so much fun that you will hardly even notice.
Meccha Chameleon is not perfect. Playing Meccha Chameleon with friends is a lot of fun it’s just a blast.
