Pokémon GO is about to bring one of the biggest updates in its history. Later this year, the game will raise the maximum trainer level from 50 to 80. Alongside this change, Niantic has launched an XP Celebration event to help trainers collect as much experience as possible before the new level cap arrives.
This marks the first major level increase since November 2020, when Level 50 was introduced. With the jump to Level 80, trainers will face new challenges, new research tasks, and exciting rewards.
Pokémon GO Level Cap Increasing to 80
The new level cap of 80 will officially go live on October 15, 2025. To celebrate the shift, players will also receive special rewards.
- Trainers at Level 50 will unlock a unique avatar pose and the Level 50 jacket, which won’t be available after the change.
- A commemorative medal will be given to all trainers to mark their current level before the new cap begins.
Key Changes With the Level Cap Update
Niantic has confirmed several important updates for leveling:
- The cap will rise from Level 50 to Level 80.
- Leveling from 1 to 80 will be rebalanced, meaning progress will feel smoother.
- Level-Up Research tasks from 41 to 50 will be removed.
- New Research tasks will appear for Levels 71 to 80.
- Trainers at Level 70 and above will have a higher chance of becoming Lucky Friends.
- New level rewards will include extra storage for Pokémon, items, and Gifts. Some avatar items will now unlock as early as Level 25.
- Based on past XP, some players may jump up several levels automatically on October 15. Details on this auto-adjustment will be shared by Niantic before the rollout.
Importantly, no one will lose their current level, but XP requirements for the next level may change.
XP Celebration Event Details

The event is designed to maximize trainer progress. For instance, the Timed Research during this event can reward players with over 7 million XP.
Bonuses During the XP Celebration
- 2x Catch XP from Nice, Great, and Excellent Throws.
- 3,000 XP for winning Raids.
- 3,000 XP for winning Max Battles.

Players can also grab the XP Celebration Ultra Box from the GO Web Store for $9.99, which includes:

- 1 Incubator

What This Means for Trainers
This update gives both casual and hardcore players a new long-term goal. For those stuck at Level 50 for years, the jump to 80 means fresh motivation. New research tasks, better rewards, and more chances to become Lucky Friends will make the grind exciting again.
The XP Celebration event is also a golden opportunity. With boosted XP rewards, it’s the best time to level up quickly before October 15. Smart players will use Lucky Eggs during raids, focus on Excellent Throws, and complete all Timed Research to get the maximum advantage.
