Spit, also known as Speed or Slam, is a fast-paced, two-player card game that tests your reflexes, quick thinking, and strategic prowess. Unlike most card games, Split is played in real time, and there are no turns; both players race to get rid of their cards as soon as possible. If you also like the adrenaline rush, this game is definitely for you!
What You Need To Play Spit
- Objective: Play all of your cards as fast as possible.
- Number of players: 2 players
- What you need: Standard 52-card deck
- Type of game: Card Game
- Audience: All Ages
Setting Up The Game
- Shuffle the deck and deal 26 cards to each player, face down.
- Now, each player will form five piles in front of them. These piles are:
- First pile: 1 card (face up)
- Second pile: 2 cards (top card face up)
- Third pile: 3 cards (top card face up)
- Fourth pile: 4 cards (top card face up)
- Fifth pile: 5 cards (top card face up)
- The remaining cards from each player’s “spit pile” will be kept face down.
- Leave space in the centre where two “spit piles” will go during play.
How To Play Spit
Objective: Be the first one to get rid of all your cards, both in the tableau and the spit pile.
- Both players simultaneously shout “Spit” and place the top card from their spit pile face up in the centre, forming two spit piles.
- Players race to play cards from their tableau onto either spit pile. You can play a card if it ranks higher or lower than the top card of a spit pile, and suits don’t matter. For example, a 7 can be played on a 6 or an 8.
- Only one card can be moved at a time using one hand after playing a card from the tableau, immediately flip the next card in that pile face up.
- If a tableau pile becomes empty, you may fill the space with any face-up card from your tableau. You can not move cards from your spit pile directly to the tableau.
- Replace played tableau cards with cards from your spit pile as long as you have them.
- There are more turns, and both players act as fast as possible.
What Happens When Play Gets Stuck
If neither player can make a move, both shout “Spit” again, and each places a new card from their spit pile onto the centre piles to restart play.
If a player runs out of spit pile cards, they continue playing with only their tableau.
How To End The Game
When a player empties their tableau, they slap one of their spit piles while the opponent takes the other pile.
Shuffle the cards from your chosen pile to form a new spit pile for the next round.
Who Wins The Game
The first player to get rid of all their cards, including their tableau and spit pile, wins the game. If both players are stuck with no moves and no spit pile cards, the one with fewer cards wins.
Strategies To Win
- Speed is everything in this game. So, practice your reflexes because the faster you can spot playable cards and move them, the faster you win.
- Keep your tableau balanced. Don’t let one pile get too deep, as it limits your options and can trap useful cards.
- Pay attention to your opponent’s moves. If you see them hesitating or focusing on a particular pile, you might be able to block their next move.
- Aces are wild as they can be played high or low. Use them to bridge gaps and keep the action moving.
- Spit is intense, but panicking leads to mistakes. Keep your calm and focus on your game.
