Instead of introducing a fully polished super-spy, the game throws players into the story of a younger and far less experienced Bond. The footage starts with Bond travelling alongside a squad sent to investigate a strange heat signature before everything suddenly goes wrong. Their helicopter is attacked and crashes, leaving Bond stranded on a hostile island surrounded by wreckage.
From there, the 007 gameplay shifts into stealth and survival as Bond searches for his teammates and quietly works his way through enemy territory.
007: First Light Gives Bond A Fresh Start
What stands out most from the footage is how grounded this version of James Bond feels. He is not portrayed as the unstoppable agent audiences know from the movies. Instead, this story focuses on the period before he earns his famous 00 status, showing a younger Bond still learning how to survive dangerous situations.
The gameplay itself feels heavily inspired by IO Interactive’s experience with the Hitman series. Players are encouraged to move carefully, avoid detection, and think through situations instead of relying entirely on gunfights. Enemy patrols, stealth routes, and environmental awareness all seem to play a major role in how missions unfold.
At the same time, the game still keeps the cinematic energy expected from a Bond title. Explosions, tense escapes, and dramatic sequences are all present even during the opening minutes.
One mechanic already catching attention is the new “Instinct” system, which allows Bond to analyse threats and react more intelligently in high-pressure moments. IO Interactive appears to be leaning into Bond’s intelligence and adaptability rather than turning the game into a straightforward shooter.
The studio has also confirmed that there will not be a New Game Plus mode at launch. Instead, replayability will come from Tactical Challenges that encourage players to tackle missions in different ways and experiment with alternate strategies.
According to the developers, the main story will take around 20 hours to complete, making it a full single-player experience focused entirely on Bond’s rise through MI6.
The excitement surrounding First Light is understandable considering how long the James Bond gaming franchise has been quiet. Fans have not received a completely original Bond game since 007 Legends released back in 2012, so expectations around this project have been building for years.
The newly released footage has only added to that anticipation. Early reactions online have been largely positive, with many fans praising the atmosphere, stealth mechanics, and the decision to focus on a younger Bond instead of copying the films directly.
007: First Light launches on May 27 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, while players who pre-ordered the game will get access a day earlier. IO Interactive has also confirmed a Nintendo Switch 2 version is planned before the end of 2026.
For now, though, the first 13 minutes have already done their job. After more than a decade without a major new Bond game, fans finally have a clearer idea of what the future of 007 in gaming looks like — and it looks far more promising than many expected.
