After a long wait and plenty of uncertainty, Subnautica 2 now has a confirmed early access release date. The game is set to arrive on May 14, 2026, at 8 AM PT for PC and Xbox Series X|S. For a sequel that’s been talked about for years, this feels like a moment fans weren’t entirely sure would come this soon.
It will launch at $29.99, which puts it on the more affordable side compared to other titles releasing around the same time. Even with a crowded release window featuring bigger franchise names, Subnautica 2 offers something different, leaning more into exploration and survival rather than fast-paced action.
Subnautica 2’s development cycle that didn’t go smoothly
The first Subnautica built its reputation gradually, becoming popular through word of mouth and its unique underwater setting. That success set high expectations for the sequel, but development hasn’t followed a straight path. Work on the game started in 2022, with an initial plan pointing toward a 2025 release, but delays quickly changed that timeline.
Things became more complicated last year when leadership at Unknown Worlds, including CEO Ted Gill, was removed by parent company Krafton. The reasoning given was that attention was being split across projects, slowing progress on Subnautica 2. Not long after, the situation turned into a legal dispute.
Members of the leadership team pushed back, claiming their removal was linked to financial targets tied to the game’s release. According to their argument, delaying the project could have avoided a large payout tied to performance goals. Earlier this year, the situation shifted again when a judge ruled in their favor, reinstating the leadership team in March 2026.
Soon after that decision, the release window became clearer, leading to the current early access date. Now, attention moves back to the game itself. Subnautica 2 is expected to build on what made the original stand out, while adding new elements like co-op play. Like most early access releases, this won’t be the final version, but rather a starting point that evolves over time based on player feedback.
