Sony has admitted that key details surrounding the PS6 are still undecided, including when the console will launch and how much it could cost. The company says ongoing memory shortages and rising component prices remain major concerns as it plans the future of PlayStation hardware.
The update came during a recent investor Q&A where Sony discussed the current state of its gaming business and the long-term future of the PlayStation brand. While fans continue speculating about the PS6, Sony made it clear that several important decisions are still being evaluated internally.
At the same time, the PS5 is approaching a huge milestone. Sony confirmed that the console is now close to reaching 100 million units sold worldwide, although its sales pace still remains behind the PS4 during the same period of its lifecycle.
The company sold 1.5 million PS5 units during the quarter ending March 2026, compared to 2.8 million during the same quarter last year. Sony said its hardware forecasts moving forward depend heavily on whether it can secure enough memory components at prices that make sense financially.
That has become increasingly difficult because of growing demand across the technology industry, especially with AI companies competing heavily for advanced chips and memory supply.
Sony appears to be taking a cautious approach with PS6
With the PS5 nearing six years on the market, many expected Sony to begin revealing clearer information about the PS6 console. Instead, the company appears to be slowing things down while it studies market conditions.
Sony president Hiroki Totoki explained that several factors are still affecting the company’s next-generation plans. While Sony believes it has enough materials to continue supporting PS5 production throughout 2026, the situation beyond that remains uncertain.

Reports in recent months have suggested that the PS6 could arrive later than expected, with some analysts believing Sony may push the launch beyond 2028 because of ongoing chip and memory issues.
Rather than rushing into a new console generation, Sony could decide to extend the PS5 era for a few more years. That strategy would allow the company to avoid launching expensive hardware during a period where production costs remain unstable.
Sony also hinted that it is exploring “new business models and products” linked to the PlayStation ecosystem. Although no official details were shared, rumors about a cheaper PlayStation handheld device continue to grow stronger online.
GTA 6 may still boost console demand
Even with uncertainty surrounding the PS6, Sony is preparing for one of gaming’s biggest upcoming releases with Grand Theft Auto 6 launching later this year.
Because GTA 6 will initially release only on consoles, many expect the game to drive another wave of PS5 sales. Rockstar titles have historically pushed huge hardware demand, and this release is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches ever.
Surprisingly, Sony’s financial forecasts suggest the company is not expecting a massive jump in hardware sales despite GTA 6’s arrival. Instead, Sony believes profits will rise through software and first-party releases rather than console sales alone.
Upcoming exclusives such as Marvel’s Wolverine are also expected to play an important role in PlayStation’s future plans. For now, Sony seems focused on managing rising costs, maintaining PS5 momentum, and waiting for the right moment before fully committing to the PS6.
