Meta, the company behind Facebook, has removed 20 Filipino influencer pages after a request from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and advocacy group Digital Pinoys. These pages were found sharing content related to illegal online gambling in the Philippines.
Why Meta Took Action
Authorities in the Philippines worked closely with Meta to find pages that were promoting unlicensed gambling platforms. Many of these pages belonged to famous social media influencers whose videos and posts had reached millions of users.
Even after getting warnings, these influencers did not stop promoting gambling sites. So, the CICC asked Meta to step in, and Meta responded by shutting down the accounts, following its own rules about online content.
This move shows that both the government and Meta are serious about stopping illegal gambling content. The goal was clear: to stop big-name influencers from spreading harmful messages and to show that no one is above the rules. This also shows how tech companies and public agencies are working together more than ever to control online content.
Not Just About These 20 Pages
This is only the beginning. The CICC is now checking more influencer accounts that may also be promoting illegal gambling. They are also looking into the payment systems used by these operators, especially e-wallets and digital payment platforms linked to offshore betting sites.
A big worry for the authorities is how gambling is often shown in fun or casual videos, making it look safe or harmless. Many posts look like entertainment but are actually paid promotions by illegal gambling platforms. Because of this, regulators are now watching social media more closely and working with groups like Digital Pinoys to collect proof.
What This Means for the Future
The takedown of these pages is part of a bigger campaign to clean up online content and protect Filipino users, especially the youth. It also sends a clear message to influencers:
If you promote illegal gambling, your platform will be taken down.
