The International 2025: Swiss System And Tickets

Valve has officially revealed that The International 2026 (TI15) will be held in Shanghai, China, marking the second time the world’s biggest Dota 2 tournament returns to the city. The announcement came just ahead of the TI14 Grand Final in Germany, making it a surprise reveal that already has the community buzzing. With Chinese Dota showing signs of revival, the timing couldn’t be better.

Why Shanghai Again?

Shanghai last hosted The International in 2019, where fans witnessed OG’s historic back-to-back championship run at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. It was a tournament remembered not only for the games but also for the passionate home crowd and the scale of production.

Valve seems to be retracing its steps, bringing the event back to iconic venues and fan-favorite regions. After returning to Germany in 2025, Shanghai in 2026 feels like the perfect continuation of this theme.

GabeN Makes the Big Reveal

The announcement was made by none other than Gabe Newell, the President of Valve. In a short video, GabeN thanked Germany for hosting such a successful TI14 before dropping the news:

“We all share our love of the game with an international community, and I’m excited to announce that next year’s International will also be returning to a previous location.”

The word “Shanghai” then appeared on screen, with August 2026 confirmed as the date. GabeN closed by saying, “I hope to see you there.”

Chinese Dota is Rising Again

The decision to host TI15 in Shanghai feels symbolic. Xtreme Gaming’s incredible run at TI14, where they topped the Swiss Stage and reached the Grand Final before narrowly losing 3-2 to Team Falcons, has reignited hopes for Chinese fans.

It brings back memories of Chinese dominance from earlier eras, when teams like Invictus Gaming, Newbee, and Wings Gaming lifted the Aegis of Champions. Many now wonder: could a home crowd advantage give Chinese Dota the push it needs to reclaim the throne?

The Last Time in China

When TI9 was held in Shanghai, it was an unforgettable event. While Chinese fans hoped for a local victory, PSG.LGD fell short, finishing third. Instead, OG etched their name in history with back-to-back wins.

Now, with Chinese Dota seemingly resurging, TI15 could bring the fairytale ending that the local fanbase has long been waiting for.
