GTA Online recently added a new in-game company called KnoWay with the A Safehouse in the Hills DLC. KnoWay is a fun parody of real-life driverless taxi services. These self-driving cabs can now be seen moving around Los Santos, which has left many players curious about whether they can actually drive one.
Here is a simple explanation of how KnoWay taxis work in GTA Online.
What Is the KnoWay Taxi in GTA Online
KnoWay uses a special version of the Karin Vivanite that drives itself. After the update, these driverless taxis started appearing across the map. They follow roads, change directions, and behave like real self-driving vehicles.
At first glance, it feels like players should be able to steal and drive them, but there is a big limitation.
When Can You Drive a KnoWay Taxi
Right now, there is only one way to control a KnoWay taxi in GTA Online. This happens during a specific mission called Negative Press.
Negative Press is part of the KnoWay Out mission chain. To start it, players need to join any online session and look for the letter A on the map. This triggers a payphone call from Avi Schwartzman.
In this mission, you are asked to enter the KnoWay taxi workshop and cause chaos. After clearing out the area, you can enter a KnoWay control pod. This pod lets you take control of one of the driverless taxis and drive it around the city.
This mission is the only time players can drive a KnoWay taxi at the moment.
Why You Cannot Drive KnoWay Taxis in Free Roam
Outside of missions, KnoWay taxis behave like normal NPC vehicles, but with special rules. You cannot open their doors, break into them, or force the driver out since there is no driver.
Even if you block their path, they will try to move around and continue driving. The only way to stop them completely is by destroying them using heavy weapons.
In free roam mode, KnoWay taxis cannot be used by players in any way.
Will Rockstar Allow KnoWay Taxis Later
As of now, Rockstar has not confirmed if players will be able to drive KnoWay taxis in free roam in future updates. Since these vehicles are already in the game world, there is a chance Rockstar may expand their use later.
For now, players can only enjoy driving a KnoWay taxi during the Negative Press mission.
