Bullshit (also called BS, Cheat, or Liar) is a fun and sneaky card game where players try to get rid of all their cards sometimes by lying. It’s easy to learn, great for groups, and always full of laughs. You can play it with 2 to 10 players, but 3 to 6 is best.
This guide will show you how to play Bullshit, explain the rules in simple words, and give you smart tips to help you win.
What You Need to Start
- A standard 52-card deck (no jokers)
- 2–10 players
- A table or flat surface
Setup:
- Shuffle the cards well.
- Deal all the cards equally to each player. Some may get one extra, which is fine.
How to Play Bullshit
- Pick who goes first – Usually, the player with the Ace of Spades starts.
- The first player plays 1 to 4 Aces face-down and says, “One Ace,” or “Two Aces,” and so on.
- The next player (to the left) must play Twos, then Threes, and so on in order.
You must say the card value out loud when placing your cards face-down, even if you’re lying.
What If You Don’t Have the Right Card?
Here’s where the fun starts. If it’s your turn and you don’t have the card you’re supposed to play (like a 5), you can lie and place other cards while pretending they’re 5s.
But be careful anyone can call “Bullshit!”
Calling Bullshit: How It Works
- If a player thinks someone is lying, they shout “Bullshit!”
- The played cards are turned over.
- If the player lied, they take the whole discard pile into their hand.
- If they were telling the truth, the person who called Bullshit takes all the cards.
You can’t call Bullshit on yourself.
Game Goal and How to Win
The goal is simple: Be the first to get rid of all your cards.
Play continues in a circle, with players announcing and discarding cards in order. Once someone runs out of cards, they win the game.
Smart Strategies to Win
Here are some fun tricks and tips to help you outsmart your friends:
- Tell the truth when you can: It keeps your card count low and avoids getting caught.
- Act confused: Pretend to forget which card is next. This may trick others into calling Bullshit even when you’re honest.
- Lie smart: Mix real cards with fake ones if you’re trying to get rid of more.
- Watch body language: You can often tell when someone is bluffing.
- Call Bullshit on the last card: Players usually don’t have the exact card to end. Take a risk and call them out.
- Organize your cards: Instead of A to K, arrange your cards based on your turn rotation (like every fourth card in a 4-player game).
