New Zealand’s government is opening the door for online casino companies to show their interest in getting an official license. This is just the first step – they want to hear from the industry to help shape clear, fair, and safe rules for everyone. The goal is to create a system that protects players, keeps things honest, and ensures strong checks on how these casinos operate.
New Zealand Opens Licensing Process for Online Casinos
The New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs is inviting online casino companies to show if they’re interested in being part of the country’s new licensing system. Trina Lowry, who leads the Online Gambling Implementation Programme, said: “For online casino operators interested in entering the New Zealand market, the most important thing you can do is register your interest.”
Lowry also stressed how important operator feedback is at this stage, saying: “As we continue to design and implement the system, we want to ensure it is clear, efficient and supportive for potential operators. To help us achieve this, we want to engage with operators to understand what information would be most helpful as the process unfolds and understand their experience and needs.”
Competitive Licensing to Ensure Strict Standards and Player Protection
The government plans to offer licences through a competitive process where only the best applicants will be chosen. To qualify, companies will need to meet several important rules and standards. The aim is to build a safe, well-managed, and fair space for online casino gambling designed for New Zealand players.
Lowry pointed out that even though online gambling is already happening on overseas websites, this new system will give the government more control: “Online casino gambling is not new in New Zealand. Everyday New Zealanders gamble on a variety of offshore gambling websites.”
Proposed Changes May Allow Advertising for Licensed Operators
Right now, under the Gambling Act 2003, advertising online casino gambling is not allowed. But with the new laws being planned, licensed operators may soon be able to promote their services to people in New Zealand. The government’s bigger goal is to keep players safe, cut down on gambling-related harm, and have stronger control over companies offering online casino games in the country.
