After defeating a number of top-tier competitors at a tournament in Las Vegas in 2012, Hostyn rose to prominence in the StarCraft II community. In 2013, she advanced in the StarCraft II world rankings to position 21 and finished second at NorthCon. Hostyn was the second-highest-paid professional female player in the world at the time by mid-2014 after winning seven tournaments. Hostyn gained more than $110,000 by the year 2014.

Hostyn has been referred to as the “Korean Kryptonite” and “the queen of StarCraft II” during her time playing the game. Her title as “the most accomplished woman in e-sports” was given by The New Yorker. The only finalist from a nation other than South Korea in the 2014 Red Bull Battle Grounds was she.
