Scientific Games: Now A Private Lottery Company

Scientific Games is now a private company focused only on lottery services. It is owned by Brookfield, a global investment firm, since 2022. Before this, it was a part of a bigger public gaming group. But after a major split and rebranding, Scientific Games became its own company again. Let’s explain everything in a simple and clear way.

A Quick Look Back at Scientific Games

Scientific Games started way back in 1973. It was one of the first companies to create instant lottery tickets. Over time, it grew into a big name in the gambling world. It didn’t just stop at lotteries it moved into casinos, online games, and even betting platforms.

It became even bigger by buying famous companies like:

  • Bally
  • WMS
  • NYX
  • OpenBet

These moves helped the company grow fast. But the business also became complicated, and the company had a lot of debt. To make things simpler and stronger, they decided to make a big change.

Brookfield Buys the Lottery Business

In October 2021, Scientific Games announced a big decision: it was selling its entire lottery division to Brookfield Business Partners, a part of Brookfield Asset Management. The sale was worth $6.05 billion and became official on April 4, 2022.

This sale changed everything:

  • The lottery division became private under Brookfield.
  • The rest of the company changed its name to Light & Wonder in March 2022.

Now, Scientific Games is a fully private lottery technology company, focused only on lotteries. It is still led by CEO Pat McHugh and based in Metro Atlanta, Georgia.

What Does Scientific Games Do Today?

Now that it only works with lotteries, Scientific Games helps over 130 lotteries in more than 50 countries. Its services include:

  • Making instant lottery tickets
  • Running draw-based lottery systems
  • Providing lottery machines and software
  • Creating digital and mobile lottery games

Their top factory is in Alpharetta, Georgia, where billions of secure lottery tickets are printed every year. It’s one of the largest and most high-tech lottery printing facilities in the world.

They also support omnichannel play this means players can switch between mobile, desktop, and in-store easily.

Scientific Games Office Locations

Scientific Games works around the world. It has offices and tech hubs in:

  • Alpharetta, USA (main office)
  • Montreal, Canada
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Leeds, United Kingdom
  • Santiago, Chile

What Happened to the Casino and Online Gaming Business?

When Brookfield bought the lottery side, the rest of the company was turned into a new brand: Light & Wonder, Inc.

Light & Wonder is:

  • Based in Las Vegas
  • Focused on slot machines, casino systems, online gaming, and social games
  • Run by its own leadership team, separate from Scientific Games

So, now Scientific Games only does lottery, and Light & Wonder handles casino and iGaming.
