The Sorrow in Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater is one of the strangest boss fights in the game. If you are playing this for the first time, you might find it confusing. The fight is not about using weapons or dealing damage, but more about understanding how Kojima’s unique mechanics work.
In the original MGS3, this battle was already known for being unusual, and the remake keeps that same feeling. It looks simple at first, but if you don’t know the trick at the end, you will lose every time. This guide will show you exactly how to win against The Sorrow.
Who is The Sorrow?
The Sorrow is a member of the Cobra Unit. You will see him several times in cutscenes, but never in physical form. He always appears as a ghost-like figure, often seen behind The Boss during story events.
This fight takes place in a dreamlike world, and the enemies you face are directly connected to your choices in the game. If you have killed many soldiers with lethal weapons, their spirits will appear and make this fight harder. But if you only knocked them out, things will be easier.
The Sorrow Boss Fight Guide
Here’s how the fight works step by step:
- Bullets are useless: The Sorrow cannot be harmed by normal weapons. His health bar doesn’t work like other bosses.
- Just keep walking: Move forward along the river. That’s the main objective.
- Avoid green projectiles: The Sorrow will sometimes fire slow, green blasts. He always gives a small warning before shooting. To dodge, go underwater until it passes.
- Watch out for spirits: You will see phantoms of soldiers you previously killed. Touching them will drain your health. Move left or right to avoid them.
- Cobra unit ghosts: One by one, other Cobra members will appear in ghost form. You must dodge them the same way you dodge the soldiers.
The Trick to Winning
The most important item here is the Revival Pill. Make sure you have it equipped before the end of the fight.
- When you reach the end of the river, you will see The Sorrow’s corpse floating. Touching it will cause Snake to collapse, and the game will show a “Game Over” screen.
- Do not restart. Instead, open your inventory and use the Revival Pill. Snake will instantly wake up, and you will officially win the fight.
There’s also another method: you can drown yourself early in the fight and then use the Revival Pill. However, this skips The Sorrow’s cameo, so the best way is to reach the corpse.
What Happens After the Fight?
Once you revive Snake, you can later return to the location (after Eva gives your gear back) to see a small extra cameo of The Sorrow. This is a nice bonus for players who complete the fight the right way.
