Rockstar Games is best known for big titles like GTA Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 5. But over the years, they have also released smaller games like GTA Chinatown Wars and Vice City Stories for handheld consoles such as the Nintendo DS and PSP. While these did not reach the same level of popularity as the main series, they built a loyal fanbase of their own.
Today, the focus of Rockstar is on GTA 6 and the future of the franchise. However, it might also be the right time to create a fresh GTA game specially designed for handheld devices.

Handheld devices are more powerful than ever
When Rockstar made Chinatown Wars and Vice City Stories, handheld consoles were limited. They could only handle smaller games, often in 2D or semi-3D format, with very simple graphics.
Things are different now. Devices like the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and even modern smartphones can run large-scale games with impressive graphics and smooth performance. Even mid-range phones can easily run mobile versions of GTA San Andreas or Vice City.
This shows that a new GTA title made specifically for handheld devices could deliver a real console-like experience on the go.
Smartphone gaming is at its peak
In today’s world, almost everyone owns a smartphone, making it the most accessible gaming device. While gaming PCs and next-gen consoles remain popular, mobile gaming is still the most widely used.
Rockstar already offers mobile versions of older GTA games, but a new title created directly for handheld devices and smartphones would attract a huge audience. A modern GTA with updated graphics, smooth gameplay, and unique features could stand out in the crowded mobile market.
Adding multiplayer or online features would make it even more engaging, letting players enjoy the GTA world with friends without needing a console or PC.
A new way to expand the GTA franchise
Releasing a handheld-exclusive GTA could also be a smart business move. Rockstar could explore new storylines, new cities, or even shorter spin-off adventures that don’t require years of development like maina titles.
This would not only keep fans entertained while waiting for GTA 6 updates but also introduce the franchise to younger players who mainly use smartphones.
Additionally, smaller handheld GTA games could experiment with creative ideas, side missions, and gameplay mechanics that might not fit into the main titles.
