The Malaysian government has announced a substantial investment of RM20 million (£3.58 million) aimed at fostering the growth of the esports industry in the country. This funding is part of a broader initiative to enhance Malaysia’s position in the global esports landscape and to encourage participation at all levels, from grassroots players to professional teams.
Major Investment in Esports
The Malaysia Madani Budget 2025 includes money for the esports sector as part of a broader goal to improve sports in the nation, according to Bernama, the national news agency of Malaysia.
A total of RM230 million (£41.1 million) will be set aside from the Malaysia Madani Budget 2025 for sports development. This increased support from the government is expected to benefit all athletes in Malaysia, including esports players.
Notably, Malaysia’s Department of Finance has allocated around £3.5 million mainly to grow the local esports scene. This funding will focus on developing infrastructure, nurturing talent, building the grassroots ecosystem, and supporting careers in esports.
Coaches, desk hosts, and other sector employees are also anticipated to be supported by the esports budget. A national esports center will also be built, offering teams and players spaces for production, events, and boot camps.
Notable Events and Viewership Success
With numerous teams and players participating in well-known games like PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Free Fire, Malaysia is a major force in Southeast Asian esports. Last season, nearly 630,000 people watched the MPL Malaysia, the country’s MLBB league. Malaysia also hosted the 2023 PUBG Global Series LAN, the M6 World Championship, and the PUBG Global Championship this year.
This decision received backing from the Malaysian Olympic Committee.
